Associate Prof. David PÉREZ-MORGA, IBMM ULB

David Pérez-Morga was born in México City in 1960 and obtained his Bachelor degree in Microbiology at the National School of Biological Sciences from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in México. He got his Ph. D. Degree in Molecular Biology in 1989 on lambda phage biology at the CINVESTAV (IPN). From 1989 to 1993 he performed post-doctoral studies on mitochondrial DNA replication of trypanosomatids at the School of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University in the USA. His main honours are the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship (1989), the EMBO Fellowship (2003) and the Prix de l’Académie Royal de Médecine de Belgique (2005). Since 2005 he is an associate professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has published 29 peer-reviewed scientific papers on high impact factor journals such as Cell, Science, J. Cell Biol., PNAS, EMBO J, and J. Mol. Biol. His main research interests are biology of trypanosomatids and cell biology of the cilium. His expertises are in molecular biology and in optical and electron microscopy.

Marjorie VERMEERSCH, B. Sc.

Marjorie VERMEERSCH was born in December 1976, She obtained her baccalaureate degree in clinical chemistry in 1999 from the HE Charleroi Europe (Fleurus). She performed her final training in the department of pathology of Erasme Hospital (headed by Isabelle Salmon) where she acquired technical expertise in pathology and immunohistology focused on microglia. She worked for 2 more years in the same department. In 2001, with the relocation of the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Gosselies, she joined the laboratory of Immunology, headed by Jacques Urbain. She worked on dendritic cells under the supervision of Muriel Moser. During the past eight years she acquired technical expertise in immunology, histology, immunohistology and confocal microscopy. In April 2009, she joined the CMMI unit dedicated to the development of electron transmission microscopy, scanning microscopy, ultramicrotomy, and ultracryotomy.

Description and applications

A. Transmission A. Electron Microscopy (TEM)

  1. Ultra-structural analysis of ultra-thin sections of tissues and isolated cells.
  2. Particle analysis by negative staining of phages, viruses and other nanoparticles.
  3. DNA and RNA imaging by spreading and shadowing techniques.
  4. R oom temperature- and cryo-ultramicrotomy (cryo-sectioning)
  5. I mmuno-gold localisation on resin-embedded ultra-thin sections, or on cryo-sections by the Tokuyasu method.
  6. Sample preparation for all the above mentioned analyses.

B. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
